ORGANISATIONS FROM across the foodservice supply chain form The Roll of Honour for the inaugural Health & Vitality Honours scheme announced today.
Caterers from the private and public sectors, manufacturers and suppliers - both global and niche - and representatives from the take out and independent hospitality sectors, have put themselves forward for recognition.
A good cross-section of the market, yes, but whilst there is evidence of tremendous achievement and initiative, it is clear that the industry is only scratching the surface when it comes to prioritising health and nutrition as integral to food provision thinking. End of term report? Could do better
But what an opportunity!
As the provider of thousands of meals a minute, the foodservice and hospitality industries are in a key position to influence diet and nutrition, and through collective action can make a major contribution to the overall health of the nation.
And public demand is growing too.
Having spent the last few years developing an interest as to where their food comes from, swathes of consumers are now beginning to ask what they should and should not be eating and why. Health and nutrition based food outlets are all over the high street and what was once niche is becoming mainstream. Recent news that (from a sample) 23% of the population still believes chips to be part of their five-a-day, may raise the eyebrows, but at least those same people are aware of the concept of five-a-day!
There is a long way to go and the job of influencing the eating habits of diners is enormous. But the drums are beating. The initiatives and programmes evidenced in this inaugural Health & Vitality Honours are a demonstration that the industry is moving forward and the initiatives of the companies in the Roll of Honour will undoubtedly benefit them both reputationally and in tender situations. The activities of these standard bearers will be copied and enhanced by more and more businesses and we expect to see major uptake in this incredibly worthwhile, socially sustainable, business strategy.
