Global sales of Fairtrade wine have reached an record high, topping 30m bottles a year. The Co-op is the world’s largest retailer of Fairtrade wine, and sells one in every three bottles of Fairtrade wine produced worldwide. This rises to two in every three bottles sold in the UK. This meant UK sales reached a high of £27.5m.

However, whilst many retail outlets have followed the Co-ops lead to offer Fairtrade wine on their shelves, the foodservice industry lags behind. Whilst the industry has embraced ethical coffee and tea, ethical wine is much harder to find on menus and in foodservice outlets.

The increase in Fairtrade wine bucks the marks’ first ever downward trend, after sales of Fairtrade goods fell for the first time since the mark was launched 20 years ago.
