Dual audit to reduce burden on SMEs

A new dual audit covering both food safety and organic standards aims to overcome some of the barriers to small businesses becoming accredited.

SALSA and the Soil Association have teamed up to launch the first-of-its kind audit for small and micro producers in the UK wishing to hold certification for both organic and food safety.

Instead of being audited twice, on two separate occasions, the business will only be audited once, on the same working day, thus reducing the burden of time, resources and money placed on SMEs by multiple audits.

The organisations said businesses that gain dual certification could expect to gain access to a wider potential market, in particular supermarket chains and catering suppliers.

“This new tie-in represents a significant milestone for both certification bodies and for our small producers,” said Sally Ball, SALSA scheme manager. “It allows members to reap the significant time and cost saving rewards, whilst ensuring they are operating to a robust, recognised food safety standard.”

The dual audit will be available from November to new and existing SALSA-registered businesses and all Soil Association Certification licensees wishing to extend their credentials.
