Wrap – should polystyrene be banned?

The government is “exploring whether we can ban other problematic materials where suitable alternatives exist”, and polystyrene should be on the list, according to Wrap CEO Marcus Gover.

Speaking at a Westminster energy, environment and transport forum on waste, Gover highlighted that there isn’t a good market for recycled polystyrene and therefore “we have to be questioning whether we should be using [it]”.

In February, the government will launch a call for evidence for how the tax system or new charges could reduce the amount of single-use plastics.

MPs on the House of Commons environmental audit committee recently called for a 25p “latte levy” on disposable coffee cups.
