The retailer’s award-winning new Loved by us Tie Handle Refuse Sacks (15s, £2.00), which are made in Britain, also save up to 15,000 litres of water per tonne unlike many other products in the market significantly reducing the energy required in the manufacturing process and the dependency on this valuable resource.

The Co-operative’s new bin liners, made using 25% of their materials from plastic waste thrown out by households each day, have been recognised for their sustainability at the 2014 FPA (Foodservice Packaging Association) awards, and are part of the retailer’s commitment to reduce carbon footprint wherever possible.

Richard Swannell, Director of Sustainable Food Systems at WRAP said: “We welcome The Co-operative’s new bin liners, which are a good use of household plastic waste that would normally end up in landfill. This shows the retailer’s commitment to innovation in pursuit of reducing their environmental footprint.”

The own-brand refuse bags (15s), priced at just £2.00 go into food stores from 7 July and have been made bigger and better with added tie handles to improve strength performance.
